UK Denominations Respond to the Supreme Court Ruling

On 16 April, 2025, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled that the legal definition of a woman is based on "biological sex".

The responses from denominations across the UK are diverse, and written for differing groups. To get the full picture, read the statements in full.

While the statements are the official response to the Supreme Court rulings, they may not reflect local church views. To find an inclusive church near you, please explore the Inclusive Church Network directory on their website.

Right now we are not offering our response on these pastoral letters. We instead encourage you to write to your denominational leaders, and statement writers, to share your thoughts and feedback.

Statements

19th April 2025

“Gender is no longer an obstacle to serving and participating within the full life of the URC. We acknowledge that we are imperfect, but strive to be a place of inclusion, safety and genuine welcome for all.

The United Reformed Church continues to follow the example of Jesus, who sat with, listened to and uplifted the marginalised in society, and used his influence to challenge the powerful. We invite our own members and others to do likewise.”

2nd May 2025

“The rights and inclusion of people belonging to our communities and using our buildings are not, and should not be, just about toilets. We will continue to work to make our corner of the Commonwealth of Heaven on Earth a more welcoming and accessible place. This is what Love requires of us.”

28th April 2025

“Following the Supreme Court's judgment, many may feel anxious, hurt, or unsettled. We need to be clear: nothing in this ruling diminishes our determination to be an inclusive church. The Methodist Church believes that all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have a place in God’s Church and trans people should always feel that they are welcome and loved.”

28th May 2025

“MCC stands with our trans siblings around the world, as they continue to experience oppression and injustice. We call out against those who are actively working to harm trans folk and demand that trans people are given protection under the law, wherever in the world they live.”

29th May 2025

“We all know individuals who feel distressed by the ruling, and we are aware that this is particularly challenging for younger persons, who are facing difficulties enough when negotiating the complexities of gender identity in a widely divergent society. To them, we say, the Church welcomes you, as you are, always.”

7th June 2025

“Trans+ people are made in the image of God, are loved by God, should be accorded the same dignity, respect and rights as cisgender people, and can and should participate fully in the life, worship, mission and ministry of the Scottish Episcopal Church.”

26th June 2025

“The Church of England welcomes and encourages the unconditional affirmation of trans people, equally with all people, within the body of Christ, and rejoices in the diversity of that body into which all Christians have been baptized by one Spirit.”
